William Lutz

Nuclear Submarine Watch Officer

My first career out of college was as a Navy Submarine Officer. I graduated Carnegie Mellon University on an NROTC scholarship and went right from college to the Navy. I left Pittsburgh to work through the nuclear power training pipeline and then eventually was assigned to the USS MIAMI (SSN-755) out of New London, CT. Being a nuclear submarine officer is one of the toughest jobs I've had.

Highlights

  • Led 32 submarine specialists through an overseas deployment, executing three missions vital to national security.
  • Managed a 21% undermanned nuclear electrical specialists’ division, to the on-time completion of a $10 million dry-docking overhaul.

Stuff I'm Proud Of

  • Developed and executed a rare intelligence mission with lasting effects, leading to the MIAMI's earning of 2011 Tactical Excellence Award.
  • Serving as the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Officer on the MIAMI. Not only did I get the job of working on ways to "generate happiness" underway, it was also my first exposure to a P&L.
When the busyness I continue to volunteer time and energy to supporting military veterans and submarine veterans. I've volunteered or served with the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation, The Mission Continues, and the Nuclear Officer Career Conference.
I hold a hypothesis that military veterans are an underutilized resource for tech startups. And look for ways to support that community when I can.
